How back-illuminated sensors work, and why they’re the future of digital photography

If you were asked to design a camera sensor, you’d naturally put the photo receptors on top, closest to the light. Oddly enough, because of the way chips are fabricated, until recently most camera sensors have captured light at the bottom, underneath layers of interconnections. The recent introduction of back-illuminated (BI) sensor technology (also referred to as backside-illuminated or BSI) has changed all that. It is now possible to build sensors “the right way round” with the photo

AMD takes war with Intel to a whole new level with rocket-launching desktop PC

At SWSW Interactive 2013, AMD will be showing off a mini-ITX PC that doubles up as a rocket launcher. The custom PC was built for AMD by Ben Heck, the rather famous modder who has brought us the Xbox 360 laptop, and portable versions of just about every old-school game console in existence.

The chassis is mostly built out of PVC foam, with the front panels made of plastic that were laser etched by Heck himself. Inside the chassis there’s an MSI mini-ITX motherboard, an AMD A10-5700 APU, a

First production hydrogen fuel cell cars hit the market, from Hyundai

Mass-produced, hydrogen-powered cars were once called the wave of the distant future. Hyundai just advanced the timetable as the first production Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell crossovers rolled off the production line in Ulsan, Korea, earlier this year. It’s based on the small crossover called the Hyundai Tucson in the US. The ix35/Tucson Fuel Cell converts hydrogen to electricity to power electric motors, rather than burning hydrogen in place of gasoline as BMW has done with its internal

In just 5 minutes, small child spends $2,500 on iPad apps

Remember how we recently reported on the lawsuit against Apple because of the former glitch that allowed for in-app purchases the first 10 minutes after purchasing an app, namely within games targeted toward kids? There were some pretty heavy damages done in those 10 minutes by some kids, the largest charge being $200.

That’s child’s play compared to the jaw-dropping $2,500 worth of in-app charges one five-year-old racked up in a mere 10 minutes, according to Business Insider. But

Sapphire is unscratchable, unbreakable, and the next big thing in touchscreens

Earlier this month, a study showed that 23 percent of iPhone users have screens that are currently broken, and the average person has put up with their broken screen for six months. We can argue about the numbers all day, but chances are almost all of you are afraid of breaking your device screen. Drop your phone from just a few feet and you’re done. It’s over. Your screen has broke. Can you fix it? How do you fix it? Who do you contact? How much will it cost? These are the kind of

Supercharge your laptop with 6 powerful utilities

It's a dark day. Your shiny new laptop has arrived, but it doesn't deliver the performance or usability you expected. You've taken for granted all the tricks your desktop system has delivered on a daily basis, and now your new (and much more mobile) PC pales in comparison.

The display seems cramped, your games run slower than expected, and battery life isn't anywhere near what you were promised. But don't resign yourself to choosing between a desktop behemoth and a finger-smudged smartphone.

Review: iPhone 5 takes next step in smartphone evolution

It's been a little more than five years since Apple released the original iPhone. During that time the world has changed. People now expect fast, reliable Internet connections and bright touchscreens on devices they can fit in their pockets.

Apple vs. Samsung: Judge puts hold on $450 million of $1 billion award

Last summer, everyone in the tech world watched excitedly to find out just how the Apple vs. Samsung lawsuit would play out. For those who were asleep, Apple sued Samsung for $2.5 billion dollars for a slew of what were, at the time, alleged patent infringements.

As we reported at the trial’s conclusion, the court ultimately ruled largely in favor of Apple. And while the Cupertino conglomerate didn’t get the full amount they were hoping for — in fact, it got less than half — it
